Roloson, Bolts rally for shootout victory
The Tampa Bay Lightning snapped out of its road doldrums on Sunday in time to rally for a 4-3 shootout victory against Florida.
Dwayne Roloson stopped all 29 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, as well all four shootout attempts, to help the Lightning rally from a 3-0 deficit in the first period. With the win, Tampa Bay moved into second place in the Southeast Division, two points behind idle Washington.
Dominic Moore scored the only goal of the shootout in the fourth round to help Tampa Bay pick up its third road victory of the season in nine tries. It also marked the team's first shootout victory in three tries and first shootout goal in nine attempts this

Rangers Biron savors 27th career shutout
The 27th shutout of Marty Biron's career may have been achieved in a pedestrian affair, but the Rangers goaltender sure wasn't about to downplay last night's 3-0 whitewash of the Jets at the Garden, certainly not when he had gone more than two years without one.
"I used to play it down, but not anymore" said Biron, whose last shutout was a 5-0 victory over the Sabres at the Coliseum on Oct. 31, 2009, while playing for the Islanders. "They're hard to come by in the league, so when you have one, you have to enjoy it very much."
Twenty-seven career shutouts is a fairly substantial accomplishment, given that 57 goaltenders in NHL history have recorded more than that, and

Montreal's Hal Gill plays 1000th NHL game
Hal Gill wonders how much one more point would have meant to his days as a Maple Leaf.
The big man, honoured here Saturday night for 1,000 NHL games, has almost no regrets about his career, but of the four cities he’s played in, two years with the Leafs marked the only stop where he missed the playoffs. And that was by the slimmest of margins. On April 7, 2007, the Leafs beat Montreal 6-5 to reach 91 points and knock out the Habs, only to see the Islanders win a shootout against New Jersey the next day for 92, stealing eighth spot.
Gill didn’t finish another year, traded to Pittsburgh for draft picks, while the Leafs haven’t been in post-season or

"Connolly's just pushing and pushing, and that's how guys make the NHL. Look at (Jeff) Skinner last year in Carolina -- no one was expecting that," said Lightning head coach Guy Boucher. "Every game he was adapting and at some point you have to consider the player might be serious."

Martin Biron was perfect versus the HC Sparta Prague (Prague, Czech Republic) in Tesla Arena, the first European exhibition game for the Rangers before their regular season begins October 7th versus the Los Angeles Kings.
New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella said that Biron “stood tall” versus Sparta, overcoming a challenging first period in net. With larger ice rinks, European hockey poses a new physical element to the game for NHL players.

Rookie Fedun tries to make jump straight from college hockey
Edmonton Oilers head coach Tom Renney didn't have a book on defenceman Taylor Fedun before this summer because he had never laid eyes on the mechanical engineering grad from Princeton University.

He does now. If there's any major surprise two weeks into the Oilers training camp, it's been Fedun's play on the blue-line.
If he doesn't make the Oilers' roster - he's in the running with Corey Potter and Taylor Chorney for the No. 7 spot - he's only a phone call away with the American Hockey League team in Oklahoma City.

For Roloson, Age is just a number (41)
Lightning G Dwayne Roloson enters the season as the league's oldest player – he'll turn 42 on Oct. 12 – and will no doubt field plenty of questions throughout the season on the subject.
That does not mean, however, he plans to answer them, particularly from the local media contingent, which brought up the subject on Friday. Roloson did answer – this time.
"Each person is here for a reason. It doesn't matter their age or how much experience they have, it's all about doing what you have to do to help the team win,'' Roloson said. Voros has something to be thankful for this -- and every -- Thanksgiving
Nov. 25, 2009
By Wes Goldstein
Even if Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving a month earlier than Americans, the "When in Rome ..." thing still feels right for Aaron Voros. That could be because the 28-year-old Vancouver native makes his living as a forward for the New York Rangers.
And spending this year's holiday in Florida with the team, well, that certainly makes it easier to get caught up in the spirit of things.

Then again, Turkey Day in November is really old hat for Voros. He got his education at an American college and has spent

Roloson's 58 saves lift Islanders to OT victory in Toronto
TORONTO — It’s been 18 years since an NHL goalie made as many saves as Dwayne Roloson did Monday night.
The 40-year-old Roloson turned aside 58 shots to help the New York Islanders beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Josh Bailey’s goal at 4:18 of overtime. The last goalie to reach that total was Ron Tugnutt, who stopped 70 shots for the Quebec Nordiques at Boston on March 21, 1991, according to STATS.
“To me, it’s just another night, another game,” Roloson said. “It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s one shot or 100 shots, I’ve got to do the same things, try to give my team a chance to win.”

Sharks' Jed Ortmeyer battles blood-clotting disorder
By David Pollak
Hockey players establish daily routines, but Jed Ortmeyer's is significantly different from anyone else's in the Sharks' locker room.
Because at some point each day, Ortmeyer must use a needle to inject a blood thinner directly into his stomach to combat a hereditary blood-clotting disorder that has threatened not only his hockey career but also his life.
The process is tricky and the timing must be precise. The blood thinner, Lovenox, needs to be in his system during the down time when he's not on the ice. And it needs to be out of his system when he plays or practices so that a hard check or a high stick does not cause fatal

Biron gets 200th win as Islanders blank Sabres 5-0
UNIONDALE , N.Y. -- Earlier this season, Jeff Tambellini couldn't even crack the New York Islanders' lineup. After Saturday's performance, he's tied for the team lead in goals.
With his father -- Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini -- in the crowd, Tambellini scored two of the Isles' three even-strength tallies in the second period and added a power-play goal in third as New York won its third straight with an impressive 5-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
"It's a pretty special night for me," Tambellini said. "To have him in the building is just the icing on top. I'm happy he was here and I'm happy he got to see that. It's a

WILMINGTON - Bruins [team stats] defenseman Matt Hunwick drew an unusual assignment for yesterday’s practice session at Ristuccia Arena.
Left winger Milan Lucic was excused from practice for personal reasons, and that created a job opening on the first line.
Hunwick normally wears the standard defenseman’s black jersey and is paired with Mark Stuart. Instead, he donned Lucic’s white jersey and skated with center Marc Savard and right winger Marco Sturm. Hunwick’s promotion was a great leap forward for the youngster from Warren, Mich.

Top notch former high school quarterback and catcher gives Canadiens badly needed size on the blue line with his 6-foot-7, 250-pound frame
Into the early 1990s, Hal Gill was a quarterback, a very good one, for Nashoba Regional High School in Bolton, Mass.
With his prodigious height, he towered over his offensive linemen to read the opposition defence. With his strong arm, he could get the ball downfield. Way downfield.
So now, sitting in the Canadiens' dressing room in the last days before his first regular-season game for his fourth NHL club - having arrived in Montreal as a free agent in July - Gill considers how his life might have turned out had he

For the better part of two years, Clark has had to answer questions during almost every inquiry about his physical health because of a string of injuries and questions about his mental health trying to deal with the frustration.
After confirming he is starting the 2009-10 season with a clean bill of health and recanting the misery of the past two years, Clark's next round of questioning likely will focus on other topics.

The right knee sprain Sean Avery sustained in a collision with Ryan Callahan at yesterday's morning skate might prevent him from being ready for the Oct. 2 season opener in Pittsburgh.
Although this is not good news for either Fashion Week Sean or for the Rangers, Avery's absence in the short run does create an opportunity for another winger to get more of a look to secure a spot on the roster.
That might be all that's needed for Aaron Voros, who entered camp as a long shot after being a healthy scratch in 19 of the 21 games the Rangers played last season after John Tortorella replaced Tom Renney behind

ISLANDERS SIGN GOALIE BIRON
July 23, 2009
The Islanders will not be caught short again.
Ensuring stability in nets regardless of the state of Rick DiPietro's health, the Islanders have signed free-agent goaltender Martin Biron to a one-year, $1.4 million steal of a deal, The Post has learned.
Biron, who will be 32 next month and who has been a No. 1 for Buffalo and, most recently, Philadelphia, is the second free-agent netminder signed this summer by the Islanders. They were crippled last season when the chronically injured DiPietro went down early with a recurring left knee injury that required surgery and limited him to five games.

Most players pause for a breather upon concluding exit meetings and returning home. The day after Matt Hunwick returned to his offseason home in Michigan, he kicked off his training, figuring he had enough inactivity following his April 18 procedure to remove a ruptured spleen.

Heading into Game 6 at Mellon Arena last night, their plan had worked, for the most part.

It is the Penguins' other scoring race.
Unlike the battle between league leader Evgeni Malkin and teammate Sidney Crosby, this one won't have a major impact on postseason awards or trophy voting.
It's the duel between Rob Scuderi and Hal Gill, which has been overlooked by nearly everyone around the league because even the players involved aren't paying much attention to it.

The Oilers came to Honda Center on Friday with a three-game losing streak. They left in sole possession of seventh place in the Western Conference thanks to a 51-save performance by Roloson in a 5-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.
Anaheim outshot Edmonton 54-20 -- including 24-3 in the third period -- but couldn't get enough pucks past Roloson to keep from dropping out of the top eight in the Western scramble. The seventh-place Oilers now have 81 points, one more than Nashville and Anaheim -- but the Predators have played one fewer game, putting them in eighth.

In February, Matt Hunwick appeared in only three NHL games. The rookie defenseman missed four games because of flu-like symptoms. He was a healthy scratch for six more. While the Bruins scored a 6-1 win over the Florida Panthers last Tuesday, Hunwick was in Providence for a one-game AHL tuneup.
Yesterday, the seldom-used Hunwick closed out the month in an unexpected position: riding shotgun on the first line with Marc Savard and Phil Kessel. Hunwick, playing his second game this season up front, responded with a 2-point performance.
On Jan. 27 against the Capitals, Hunwick skated on the fourth line. On Friday, Hunwick practiced as a forward.

Pisani's finally back in

Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, Fernando Pisani has plenty of experience at this.
While returning from extended stays on injured reserve isn't something any player wants to be well-schooled in, at least Pisani has something to draw from in his latest comeback.
"I was excited; it was a long time coming," said the Oilers winger, who spent more time on the sidelines with his broken ankle - 14 and a half weeks - than anyone expected. "Anytime you're injured you feel like you're an outsider looking in. You want to be out there. You want to be a part of the team. That's probably been the toughest part."

Goalie's legs won't get a break as long as he's standing on his head

PHOENIX -- This is where Dwayne Roloson, according to most of the popular theories, was supposed to break down.
At 39 years of age, his legs, back and mind were supposed to tremble and snap beneath the kind of unrelenting workload Craig MacTavish is heaping on right now.
That's why they went out and got Mathieu Garon, after all, to help ease the burden on their aging starter.
And here they are a year later, with Garon out of the picture and Roloson a year older, taking the whip to their veteran war horse almost every single night.
